Greenwood too much for Rogers Heritage

War Eagles rally for seventh straight victory

ROGERS -- The Greenwood Lady Bulldogs sprung the trap on Rogers Heritage on Thursday night.

It worked to the tune of 20 Lady War Eagle turnovers in the first half to help Greenwood roll to a 58-23 win in nonconference girls basketball in War Eagle Arena.

Heritage (4-6) struggled against Greenwood's ferocious defensive pressure, especially early, as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 22-2 lead early in the second quarter.

Greenwood coach Clay Reeves liked the way his team played, particularly the strong start. The Lady Bulldogs have played a lot of players every night and the balance has been good as six or seven different players have led in scoring on a given night, Reeves said.

"We came out and played real hard," Reeves said. "Got some steals. Got some turnovers and did a great job offensive rebounding. I was happy with all that. It seems like we got the good lead. I'll give Heritage credit, they fought back.

"I thought we rebounded good and were aggressive on defense. We're gonna shoot the ball a lot and all of our kids have the green light. We had 12 players score tonight. We've been having 10 or 12 players score every night. I told them that's going going to be great for the long run."

Freshman guard Haven Clements led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, while junior Kyiah Julian added 10. Freshman Kinley Fisher added nine for the Lady Bulldogs, all in the first half. Brooke Menke led Rogers Heritage with 10 points.

Heritage coach Scott Moore said the pressure wasn't anything his team hadn't seen before. The Lady War Eagles just didn't handle it well.

"It's hard to play a team like that where they're going to be physical just every touch of the ball," Moore said. "We need to be tougher against that. It's just something as we look at it, we've played better teams than them and competed way better played way closer.

"Tonight, just the physicality took us out of our game and we created more pressure for ourselves. There wasn't as much pressure as we mentally thought there was. We need to be smarter. We need to be tougher."

The Lady War Eagles managed just two field goals in the first half as Greenwood led 29-13 at halftime.

Heritage got within 13 midway through the third quarter, but Greenwood responded with a 10-2 spurt to end the quarter and outscored the Lady War Eagles 18-4 in the fourth quarter.

Heritage (8-2) has now won seven straight games, but Greenwood led 32-29 at halftime.

War Eagles coach Tom Olsen was pleased with his team's effort in the second half, especially holding Greenwood to seven points in the third quarter.

"We made a few adjustments at halftime and got out of some things and I thought we really slowed them down," Olsen said. "We did a lot better job defensively. Seth did an outstanding job as he always does scoring, but he really did a great job on the boards.

"I was pleased. Greenwood's a good team. The Shepard kid can really play. I thought we did a good job keeping them off the foul line."

The 6-foot-5 Stanley, who also hit three 3-pointers, scored the last five points of the third quarter off a baseline move and a 3-pointer to give Heritage 46-39 lead.

A 6-0 spurt early in the fourth quarter pushed the War Eagles' lead to double digits with 5 minutes, 35 seconds left. Greenwood pulled within 60-54 with less than a minute left, but got no closer.

Both Heritage teams won be in action again until Dec. 28 when they both go to Enid, Okla., for a three-day tournament.
