• Two modern, concrete bridges will span the Arkansas river, one at the foot of Main street and the other at the foot of Broadway. Work on the Broadway bridge will be started within three weeks, while the Main street structure will not be started until the sub-structure of the Broadway bridge is completed, about December 15. According to an agreement reached at a conference last night between promoters of the two bridges and County Judge Lee Miles, Pulaski County will contribute $450,000 toward building the two structures, each receiving $225,000.

ARKANSAS CITY -- Meanness caused a woman to pour a hot mixture of grits, grease and syrup on her former boyfriend, set fire to his house and threaten to kill him, a prosecutor said. Karen Thomas was convicted of first-degree battery Wednesday by a Desha County jury and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She was also convicted of reckless burning and witness tampering and fined a total of $16,500. The jury rejected an attempted capital murder charge against the woman. She originally was charged with arson, terroristic threatening, intimidating a witness and first degree battery.
