Property owners group asks Garfield to look at Ashmore Creek streets

GARFIELD — Wayne Simonton, representing the Property Owners Association of Ashmore Creek, asked the council to consider taking in the streets of Ashmore Creek subdivision. There was lengthy discussion with city officials and city attorney Michael Bearden. The council agreed to meet with the association’s representatives to explore the possibility of accepting the private streets.

“I want to see the city of Garfield help with those streets,” Mayor Gary Blackburn said. “We have to be fiscally responsible and we have to do it legally.”

Morrison recommended moving money allotted for special Planning Commission meetings back into the general fund as she said the meetings were no longer needed. The mayor recommended postponing the action until the end of the quarter. The council agreed.

Blackburn told the council he would replace all water meters on Mountain Drive. A resident of Mountain Drive, the mayor told council members he knew his meter had been there since 1980. He said replacing the old meters should provide more accurate readings on water use.

Alderman Susie Morrison announced she’ll resign effective at midnight Sunday as she and her husband will be moving out of state.

Morrison was elected in November 2016. Her husband, Zannie, has served as the code enforcement officer since February 2016.

Blackburn commended Morrison on her service to the community.
