One person found shot inside car in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- Police stopped a driver on suspicion of speeding this afternoon and found a person with a gunshot wound in the backseat of the car at the intersection of Government Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing, said Lt. Anthony Murphy. No further information was available yet.

A male patient was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center with serious injuries at 4 p.m., said Becky Stewart, Central EMS chief. Stewart said she could not confirm whether the person was over the age of 18.

At least seven police vehicles blocked MLK Jr. Boulevard and rerouted traffic for about an hour. Crime scene investigators and patrol officers were on scene.

Two witnesses said three people jumped out of a white car headed east on MLK Boulevard and ran away. The car was stopped directly across from the Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Four people were in the car, including one person who was shot in the leg, Dan Parsons said. He and his son, Wyatt Braswell, stood in the parking lot watching police search the car.

A police officer gave one man a slip that appeared to be a speeding ticket, Braswell said. Police talked to the man twice by 4:30 p.m., Parsons said. Later, they placed the man in handcuffs and put him in the back of a patrol vehicle.

Police searched the vehicle where they found what appeared to be drugs. That is worrisome, Parsons said.

"Drugs brings crime," Parsons said. "When it's your hometown, it's not fun to watch."
