• As recently as a year ago, Little Rock University's Music Department, a part of the Fine Arts Division that also includes drama and art, was a stepchild that suffered too much from the lack of such essentials as shelter. It was stashed away in a surplus Army barracks whose walls ill-separated the blasting, tootling and tinkling away on instruments in adjacent practice rooms. It lacked respectable rehearsal or practice space for musical groups and individuals and most of all, it lacked a showcase for its product. Then last September the Division moved into its new $1 million-plus classroom building-theater, and things are changing rapidly.

• Little Rock residents will get a chance Tuesday to tell the city Board of Directors their opinions about a proposed youth curfew law. A public hearing on the matter will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the board's meeting room on the second floor of City Hall, 500 W. Markham St. Hit with questions last week from several residents and Police Chief Louie Caudell about the fairness of a curfew, the board decided to hold the public hearing to better gauge public sentiment. Mayor Sharon Priest said the board also hopes to clear up misconceptions about the proposed curfew ordinance, which she said is "getting a little bit misunderstood."

• The driver of a reportedly stolen car that slammed into crossing traffic April 6 in central Little Rock is out of jail and is facing only minor charges. Leon Blanks, 44, of 9201 Kanis Road was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and fleeing after he was released from a hospital early last week. Because of continued full capacity at the Pulaski County jail, Blanks was released from custody Tuesday with an agreement to appear in court. A month ago, Blanks' ex-wife, Kelly Blanks, reported that he had taken her 1999 Saturn SL2 without permission, according to a report.
