"Pat Walker loved God and was a child of God who loved the community," said Rick Grace, pastor of SpringCreek Fellowship in Springdale. Walker was a longtime member of SpringCreek, previously First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Springdale.

Pat Walker of Springdale thanks Cooper Elementary students for a hand-made card they presented to her at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. Pat Walker — and her husband, the late Willard Walker — gave many generous gifts to the community, yet remained humble thanks to their faith, said Rick Grace, pastor of SpringCreek Fellowship, where the Pat Walker was a member. The Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation established a $10 million endowment to Crystal Brideges to pay for ransportation, lunches and other costs for kindergarten through high school students to visit the museum.

"She had an identity in Christianity," he continued. "She knew who she was in Christ."

This allowed Pat Walker, who died Sept. 2, to make the generous gifts to the community yet remain humble, Grace said.

"She never let her circumstance dictate who she was. She was the sweetest, most unpretentious person."

Walker served the church as a Sunday school teacher and through the women's ministries.

Grace said he most remembers the first time he met "Miss Pat" when he came to the church in 2005. She came to his office, and after a short visit, "She said, 'There are a lot of members of this congregation who are older. (In nursing homes and other care facilities, Grace explained.) And someday, you are going to be called upon to officiate their funerals. I think you should meet them.'

"What was ironic to me was that she was 86, and she wanted me to meet the old people," Grace laughed.

Walker and Grace got together for regular visits to these members until Walker's health kept her at home.

"She loved going and seeing the old folks," Grace said. "And she especially liked to visit when a baby was born. She liked to hold the babies."

Walker was a member of the church's Metallic Bible study. "The requirements for this class were you had to have silver in your hair, gold in your teeth or lead in your seat," Grace explained.

Walker attended regularly, and she always brought snacks, he continued. In the later years, she had a caregiver that loved to cook, and she made the snacks for Walker to bring.

A former Sunday school teacher, Walker was very aware of her Bible, Grace said.

Here are some of Walker's favorite verses, provided by Grace.

PSALM 91

(especially verses 14-16)

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,

my God, in whom I trust."

Surely he will save you

from the fowler's snare

and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his feathers,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

You will not fear the terror of night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

nor the plague that destroys at midday.

A thousand may fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand,

but it will not come near you.

You will only observe with your eyes

and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, "The Lord is my refuge,"

and you make the Most High your dwelling,

no harm will overtake you,

no disaster will come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you

to guard you in all your ways;

they will lift you up in their hands,

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread on the lion and the cobra;

you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him;

I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

He will call on me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble,

I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him

and show him my salvation."

PSALM 84

How lovely is your dwelling place,

Lord Almighty!

My soul yearns, even faints,

for the courts of the Lord;

my heart and my flesh cry out

for the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home,

and the swallow a nest for herself,

where she may have her young--

a place near your altar,

Lord Almighty, my King and my God.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house;

they are ever praising you.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you,

whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

As they pass through the Valley of Baka,

they make it a place of springs;

the autumn rains also cover it with pools.

They go from strength to strength,

till each appears before God in Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;

listen to me, God of Jacob.

Look on our shield, O God;

look with favor on your anointed one.

Better is one day in your courts

than a thousand elsewhere;

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield;

the Lord bestows favor and honor;

no good thing does he withhold

from those whose walk is blameless.

Lord Almighty,

blessed is the one who trusts in you.

PSALM 63:1-8

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,

earnestly I seek you;

I thirst for you,

my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land

where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary

and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life,

my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live,

and in your name I will lift up my hands.

I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;

with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;

I think of you through the watches of the night.

Because you are my help,

I sing in the shadow of your wings.

I cling to you;

your right hand upholds me.

JOHN 14:1-6, 12

Jesus the way to the Father.

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Verse 12

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

PSALM 23

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

for his name's sake.

Even though I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

forever.

PROVERBS 18:24

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,

but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

PSALM 8

A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory

in the heavens.

Through the praise of children and infants

you have established a stronghold against your enemies,

to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens,

the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars,

which you have set in place,

what is mankind that you are mindful of them,

human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels

and crowned them with glory and honor.

You made them rulers over the works of your hands;

you put everything under their feet:

all flocks and herds,

and the animals of the wild,

the birds in the sky,

and the fish in the sea,

all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!
