Rotary's visit to Spamalot the holy grail of fundraisers

Granted, the Rotary Club and Monty Python's Spamalot would not seem to go together. That is, if one were to take into account the old stereotype of Rotarians being stodgy senior citizens all of the same skin color.

But this organization of service-providing business and professional leaders has broken out of that stereotype. And members of the Rotary Club of North Little Rock don't mind having a few laughs at some British-inspired nonsense.

The club on Tuesday hosted Rotary at the Rep, a fundraising reception, silent auction and preview of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre's musical production of Spamalot. Other participating Rotary chapters included Little Rock Metro, Little Rock Midtown, Maumelle, North Little Rock Riverside, Sherwood and West Little Rock.

For two hours, attendees -- of various ages and walks of life -- enjoyed heavy hors d'oeuvres and libations on two floors of The Rep building while bidding on a large, eclectic hodgepodge of items donated by club members, friends and local businesses. Servers for the evening were teachers from the North Little Rock School District. Then it was on with the show, a retelling of the legend of King Arthur and an adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail ... Laker Girls, "expensive forest," killer rabbit, Britney Spears reference and all.

Proceeds will benefit the community service projects of the different clubs.
