Empty boat leads authorities to body in Arkansas river

Authorities found the body of a Trumann man in the St. Francis River on Thursday after someone reported seeing a driverless boat motoring down the waterway.

Crews found Millard Branum, 77, near Ditch 60 of the river, known locally as "Deadend Ditch," Poinsett County Sheriff Larry Mills said in a news release.

The sheriff said the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission received a call Thursday afternoon from someone who said he saw an empty boat going down Ditch 60 off the St. Francis River east of Trumann.

Deputies found Branum's truck hooked to a boat trailer that was still in the water.

Rescue crews then searched the river, and Branum's body was found Thursday evening, Mills said. He does not expect foul play.

Branum's body was sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for an autopsy.
