Watershed group receives award

The Beaver Watershed Alliance recently received the Leadership and Service - Outreach and Education Award at the 36th International Lake Management Symposium held by the North American Lake Management Society in Banff, Canada.

Accomplishments leading to the award include design and delivery of effective outreach and education programming about the voluntary protection of Beaver Lake. The efforts enable public and private landowners to take action to protect the lake watershed.

The alliance began in 2013 identifying streamside, forest and pasture landowners in priority watershed areas to mail quarterly newsletters about the watershed. The newsletters contain information such as what a watershed is, water quality issues in the watershed, special water quality projects, information about free property visits and more.

The alliance's programs have grown to reach 16,200 landowners, or about 75 percent of the watershed population in three years. Volunteers have planted seven miles of riparian buffers and removed over 60,000 pounds of trash from 100 miles of waterways.

The alliance is a nonprofit organization focused on maintaining high quality drinking water in Beaver Lake and improving water quality within the watershed.
