ASU survives a late flurry by Army

Two days after defeating Georgetown 78-72 in Washington, D.C., Arkansas State (3-1) survived two last-second tying three-point attempts in defeating Army 60-57 as part of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at West Point, N.Y.

Mac Hoffman hit two free throws with 52 seconds left to give the Red Wolves a 60-57 lead. Jahmiah Simmons rebounded a missed three-pointer by Army’s Thomas Funk with 14 seconds remaining, but he was stripped by Thomas Kennedy. The ball ended up back in the hands of Funk, who airballed one final attempt.

ASU led by as many as 20 in the second half when Rashad Lindsey made a three-pointer with 14:06 remaining for a 45-25 lead. The Cadets (1-2) began to whittle the deficit down from there, getting it to under 10 points at 59-50 with 4:10 remaining on a Jordan Fox three-pointer.

Hoffman led all players with 17 points on the strength of 9-of-10 shooting at the free-throw line. Fox added 15 points for the Cadets, who shot 31.5 percent (17 of 54) from the field.

SOUTHLAND MEN

TENN.-CHATTANOOGA 75,

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 64

Central Arkansas (0-3) trailed 39-24 at halftime and never threatened Tennessee-Chattanooga (3-1) in the second half of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at West Point, N.Y.

The Bears never led against the Mocs, although they managed three ties in the first half. A 9-1 burst led to Tennessee-Chattanooga’s halftime advantage. UCA trailed by as many as 21 (54-33) in the second half but got the game down to as low as nine (73-64) on Darraja Parnell’s layup with nine seconds left in the game.

Jordan Howard led the Bears with 16 points. Jeff Lowery had 13, followed by Mathieu Kamba’s 12 and Otas Iyekekpolor’s 11.

Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Johnathan Burroughs-Cook led all scorers with 18 points. Justin Tuoyo had 16, while Tre’ McLean chipped in 13 for the Moccasins.

The Bears outrebounded the Moccasins 44-32, but they suffered 19 turnovers that were converted into 20 points.

SUN BELT WOMEN

FORDHAM 65, UALR 43

UALR (1-3) could manage only a combined 10 points in the first and third quarters and lost to Fordham (2-1) in a consolation game of the Preseason WNIT at Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, N.Y. It was the third loss of the season for the Trojans, who opened the year with a 55-44 victory over North Texas on Nov. 11.

The Rams opened a 19-4 lead after the first quarter, but UALR managed to close the deficit to 25-17 at halftime. Fordham opened the second half on a 21-4 run for a 46-21 lead before leading 49-23 at the end of the third quarter. The Trojans got the lead down to 21 on two occasions in the final quarter.

TENNESSEE STATE 76,

ARKANSAS STATE 66

Tennessee State (1-2) closed the first half on a 14-0 run against Arkansas State (0-3), and the Red Wolves eventually fell on the road at the Gentry Center in Nashville, Tenn.

ASU led 38-26 with 5:26 left in the second quarter before the Lady Tigers went on their 14-0 spree to lead 40-38 at halftime. The Red Wolves led as late as 54-52 with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter after Tahlon Hopkins’ three-pointer, but TSU went on a 11-3 run to take over.

TSU’s Diamond Beatty led all scorers with 23 points, which included 5-of-10 three-point shooting. Teammate Jayda Johnson had 19 points, while the Lady Tigers’ I’mani Davis had 16 to go with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Dominique Oliver led ASU with 13 points. Hopkins came off the bench to score 11 points, while Brittany Fowler chipped in 10.
