Brief I-49 closure set to move crane

Moving a crane into an Interstate 49 median in Benton County will require closing lanes in both directions for 15 minutes between 10 p.m. and midnight today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Northbound and southbound traffic will be stopped between Wagon Wheel Road in Springdale and Arkansas 264 in Lowell, weather permitting.

Traffic will be stopped prior to the exits to allow vehicles to get off the highway, the department said.

Traffic control will be handled by the Arkansas State Police. Advance warning signs also will be placed to notify traffic approaching the closure.

The department said motorists should be cautious if traveling in the work zone and encouraged them to find alternate routes to avoid the closure.

The work is part of a $100.6 million project to construct 4 miles of new four-lane U.S. 412 bypass from I-49 to Arkansas 112.
