Few inches more to fall on wet state

The weather system that has been drenching southeast Arkansas and neighboring states was expected to drop a few more inches of rain Saturday evening, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

Meteorologist Michael Brown also said tornadoes and hail were possible throughout the state today.

Areas near Drew and Desha counties were expected to receive another 2 inches of rain Saturday night, raising the total received last week to around 17 inches. The system was then expected to move northward and drop another inch of rain on central Arkansas.

The National Weather Service had measured 5.4 inches in Little Rock as of Saturday afternoon.

Flooding along the Ouachita River also was a concern in its stretch between Bradley and Calhoun counties. The week's plentiful rain has flooded the river to near-moderate levels, the weather service said. However, by Monday, the river is expected to crest at 37 feet as runoff flows through the watershed, Brown said.

The system that moved into Arkansas on Tuesday has led to the evacuation of several dozen people in recent days and also led Gov. Asa Hutchinson to declare at least 13 Arkansas counties disaster areas.

The weather system also has caused widespread flooding in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

At least three people had died in Louisiana by Saturday evening, and Mississippi officials were looking for two missing fishermen, said Lee Smithson, head of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
