RANGERS

Infielder acquired

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers have acquired infielder Kyle Kubitza from the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.

After making the deal Tuesday, the Rangers optioned Kubitza to Class AAA Round Rock.

Kubitza was drafted in the third round of the 2011 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves, who traded him to the Angels in January 2015. He made his major league debut last season. He played in 19 games for the Angels -- at second base, third base and left field.

Kubitza, 25, was born in Arlington. He graduated from nearby Colleyville Heritage High School before going to Texas State, where he was teammates with Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt.

In 54 games at Class AAA Salt Lake this season, Kubitza hit .253 with 2 home runs and 19 RBI.

PHILLIES

Draft pick signed

PHILADELPHIA -- It's official -- the Philadelphia Phillies have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak.

The team introduced Moniak at a news conference Tuesday. He will receive a $6.1 million signing bonus.

The move was announced Monday night on Twitter with a picture of Moniak signing his contract.

A high school outfielder from California, Moniak hit .476 with 12 triples, 7 home runs and 46 RBI in his senior year at La Costa Canyon High School.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Moniak was the first prep outfielder selected No. 1 overall since Delmon Young went to Tampa Bay in 2003. The Phillies chose Pat Burrell the only other time they held the No. 1 pick in 1998.

INDIANS

Brantley has tendinitis

CLEVELAND -- Indians outfielder Michael Brantley has been diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis.

Brantley, who had surgery on his right shoulder in November, was examined by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on Tuesday. Indians manager Terry Francona said the exam showed Brantley's shoulder is structurally sound.

Brantley has been given a cortisone shot.

Brantley is on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. He had been swinging the bat off soft-toss and a hitting tee, but felt discomfort as he increased his activities last week.

Brantley began the season on the DL and returned April 25. He appeared in 11 games and batted .231 with seven RBIs before returning to the DL on May 14 when he was also given a cortisone shot.

No timetable for Brantley's return has been established, but Francona believes the fact the shoulder is structurally sound is encouraging.

"I'm sure Brantley is thrilled," he said. "And if this is what it is they can knock that out and he will get back on the path of coming back So of all things it could have been this is great news."

Brantley finished third in the AL MVP voting after batting .327 with 20 home runs and 97 RBI in 2014. He hit .310 with 15 home runs and 84 RBI last season.

RAYS

Two placed on DL

CLEVELAND -- The Tampa Bay Rays have placed Steve Pearce and Mikie Mahtook on the 15-day disabled list after both players were injured in Monday night's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Pearce strained his right hamstring running to first base after hitting a fly ball in the ninth inning. Mahtook suffered a broken left hand when he was hit by a Josh Tomlin pitch in the second.

Pearce is hitting .322 with 9 home runs and 25 RBI in 51 games. He has played first base, second base and designated hitter.

Mahtook, who has played all three outfield spots, is batting .154 with 3 RBI in 24 games.

Tampa Bay has five players on the disabled list, including Steven Souza Jr. (strained left hip), Kevin Kiermaier (broken left hand) and Brandon Guyer (strained left hamstring).

Infielder Nick Franklin and right-hander Ryan Garton were called up from Class AAA Durham.

BRAVES

Outfielder fractures thumb

MIAMI -- The Braves said rookie outfielder Mallex Smith is expected to be out eight to 10 weeks because of a fractured left thumb he suffered during an at-bat on Monday at the Mets.

An X-ray on taken at the stadium on Sunday revealed the fracture and Smith met with a hand specialist on Monday in New York. The Braves placed Smith on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and said Smith would be evaluated again in a week to determine if surgery is necessary.

To take Smith's place on the roster, the Braves purchased the contract of Emilio Bonifacio from Class AAA Gwinnett.

Smith, 23, has been a lineup regular since being called up from Gwinnett during the second week of the season. He's started 31 games in center field and 16 in left while batting .237 with a .312 on-base percentage and a team-leading 14 stolen bases in seven attempts.
