Izard County man found dead in tree

MOUNTAIN HOME -- The Baxter County sheriff's office is investigating the death of an Izard County man found hanging upside down in a tree near the Baxter-Izard county line, Sheriff John Montgomery said.

Authorities discovered the body of Weldon G. Speirs II, 27, of Horseshoe Bend on Sunday morning in a wooded area near Wild Fern Lane. Montgomery said it appeared Speirs' foot had become lodged in the crevice of a tree and Speirs had been unable to free himself.

Speirs was visiting friends on Wild Fern Lane over the weekend, family members said.

Deputies found Speirs' vehicle parked nearby.

Authorities sent his body to the state crime laboratory in Little Rock for an autopsy, Montgomery said. "All immediate indications are that the death was accidental," he said.

The investigation remained open pending the results of the autopsy, he said.
