Rogers man sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting boys

BENTONVILLE -- A Rogers man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday after he admitted he sexually assaulted two boys.

Michael Wayne Burkett, 26, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of first-degree sexual assault, a felony. He pleaded guilty under an agreement attorney Ben Crabtree reached with Carly Marshall, deputy prosecutor.

Burkett was arrested Jan. 22 after the Benton County Sheriff's Office investigated complaints concerning the sexual assaults of a 12-year-old boy and 7-year-old boy.

The boys were interviewed at the Children's Advocacy Center of Benton County where they provided details of the abuse. The younger boy reported Burkett threatened him if he told anyone about the abuse, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The older boy reported he had been abused by Burkett for several years, according to court documents.

Law enforcement and the victims were in favor of the plea agreement, Marshall said.

Burkett was sentenced to 25 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. He will have to abide by a suspended sentence agreement for 20 years after his release from prison. He will be required to register as a sex offender.
