Arkansas State Police and the Clark County sheriff's office are investigating the death of a 5-year-old girl.
Deputies responded about 1:25 p.m. Monday to a residence near Amity and found a woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter unresponsive, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said.
The woman was hospitalized with a gunshot wound. The girl was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to state police.
About the same time Sunday, a man called the sheriff's office and said he believed his grandson had been poisoned, state police reported. The man said he was headed to a hospital with the 6-year-old boy.
The boy was being treated Monday at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
The sheriff's office had not released further information on the incidents, or identified those involved. The department said Sheriff Jason Watson was unavailable for comment late Monday afternoon.
Sadler said an investigation is ongoing.
