Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Tuesday ordered that U.S. and Arkansas flags be flown at half-staff in memory of Dale Bumpers, a former Arkansas governor and U.S. senator.

Bumpers died Friday night at the age of 90 at his Little Rock home, surrounded by family.

Flags across the state are ordered to remain at half-staff until sunset Sunday, according to a proclamation signed by Hutchinson.

In a statement Saturday, Hutchinson said the "entire state mourns the loss of an Arkansas legend."

During his political career, Bumpers was known for defeating Orval Faubus and Winthrop Rockefeller for governor in 1970 and J. William Fulbright in 1974 for a U.S. Senate seat, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

A memorial service for Bumpers is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church.
