Hilda Daves, 49, was arrested for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and first-degree battery in the Jan. 17 death of her grandchild and the injury of another in Amity, which is about 25 miles northwest of Arkadelphia.

Daves appeared in court Wednesday and remains in the Clark County jail. Formal charges are pending as officials await the decision of Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Blake Batson, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff's office.

Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson said in the news release that his office received a 911 call about 1:25 p.m. Jan. 17 saying Daves was suicidal and that she had poisoned her two grandchildren, a boy and a girl.

The names and ages of the children were not included in Watson's statement, and calls to the sheriff Wednesday went unanswered.

Watson said in the release that officers forced entry into Daves' home, where they found Daves shot and her granddaughter unresponsive. Daves' grandson was already being transported to CHI St. Vincent in Hot Springs when officers arrived.

Daves and the granddaughter also were transported to the hospital, where the granddaughter was declared dead and Daves was treated for gunshot wounds.

The grandson was eventually taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where he was treated and released. Daves remained in the hospital until her arrest Tuesday.

The sheriff's release toxicological reports on both grandchildren showed they had prescription drugs in their systems, and that sheriff's investigators and Arkansas State Police found related prescription drugs in Daves' home.
