Train derails in Altheimer; none hurt

No one was injured when a Union Pacific train derailed northeast of Pine Bluff on Friday afternoon, a Jefferson County official said.

The derailment was reported shortly after 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of East Front Street in Altheimer, a town of 984 residents about 15 miles northeast of Pine Bluff, a Metropolitan Emergency Communication Association operator said.

Altheimer's volunteer fire department requested assistance from the Jefferson County sheriff's office and a crew capable of handling hazardous material, the operator said.

Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Melody Daniel said Friday evening that some train cars had overturned, and others were piled on top of one another. She said one of the cars was carrying propane, but it was not leaking.

Jefferson County emergency crews secured the scene, Daniel said, adding that the state Department of Emergency Management was not called to the site.
