I-49 lanes, ramps to close for paving, barrier removal

Construction will require another series of overnight lane closures on Interstate 49 in Springdale for four days beginning Sunday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews removing temporary barriers and placing the final surface on northbound and southbound lanes of I-49 between U.S. 412 and Elm Springs Road will require the median and outside lanes between U.S. 412 and Wagon Wheel Road to be alternately closed each night through Thursday, weather permitting.

Further, the southbound exit ramp and northbound entrance ramp at Elm Springs Road also will be closed to traffic on alternating nights for resurfacing, the department said. Motorists wishing to access I-49 at Elm Springs Road will need to use the U.S. 412 or Wagon Wheel Road entrances.

Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels.

The northbound lane closures on I-49 will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. while the southbound lane closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The southbound exit ramp closure at Elm Springs Road will last from 10 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The northbound exit ramp closure will be from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The work is part of a $21.6 million project to widen 3.4 miles of I-49 to six lanes from U.S. 412 to Wagon Wheel. The work is expected to be completed later this year, according to the department.
