Arkansas inmate dies, found unconscious in cell

A state prison inmate serving a 10-year sentence for theft of property died shortly after being found unresponsive Tuesday, according to the Arkansas Department of Correction.

Grady Demery, 32, was found about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in his cell at the Grimes Unit in Jackson County, department spokesman Solomon Graves said in a statement.

Demery was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Graves said Demery was alone when he was found unresponsive.

"Per policy, Arkansas State Police was notified and is conducting an investigation into the death," Graves said.

Court records show that Demery was ordered in September 2015 to serve 10 years in prison as part of a plea agreement on charges stemming from the July 2010 robbery of a Pizza Pro restaurant in Cabot.

The Grimes Unit is about 4 miles northeast of Newport off Arkansas 384.

Additional information about Demery's death was not immediately available.
