Master gardener to lecture in Fort Smith

FAYETTEVILLE -- A lecture by Felder Rushing, a horticulturist and gardening columnist and author, is set for Thursday night at the Fort Smith Convention Center.

The focus of the 7 p.m. lecture will be "Slow Gardening," an approach that focuses on finding and following personal garden bliss, according to a news release. Admission is free and open to the public.

The lecture is part of River Valley Master Gardeners' yearlong celebration of 25 years of Master Gardening in the river valley.

Rushing splits his time between his Jackson, Miss., home and his cottage farm in the United Kingdom. He travels extensively, giving more than 90 lectures and seminars a year. He has written or co-written 18 gardening books, including "Passalong Plants," "Slow Gardening" and "Bottle Trees and Other Whimsical Glass Art for the Garden."

Rushing is a former Extension Service urban horticulture specialist in Mississippi. He is a longtime syndicated columnist.

Rushing hosts a weekly call-in show on Mississippi Public Radio that will be broadcast Friday from the Fort Smith Library.

The Learning Fields, a Master Gardener project featuring more than two dozen demonstration gardens, will hold a free open house beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday with guided tours.
