Baseball: Heffley fans 15 to lead Rogers

ROGERS -- Harrison Heffley didn't like the result the last time he walked off the mound at Veterans Park.

On Tuesday, he didn't want to leave.

Heffley, the Rogers High left-hander who has signed with Arkansas, struck out 15 Fort Smith Southside batters in an 8-0 complete-game win. Heffley threw 123 pitches, 79 for strikes, and got six batters on called third strikes. He ended the game with a punchout.

"After the Fayetteville game, I just thought I was trying to be too fine," Heffley said of his last outing where he lasted just 3 1/3 innings and walked six batters. "I've been struggling to find my release point. Today I wasn't trying to hit corners, just put it over the middle and it will move where it needs to go."

Heffley's back-door breaking pitch was working from the opening pitch, and he used it repeatedly to baffle the Southside hitters. The Rebels (11-12, 4-6) managed just four hits and Heffley walked just two batters.

"I thought he threw well," Southside coach Dale Harpenau said. "He showed enough command of his breaking ball and he was able to pitch off his fastball. Our game plan was to make him throw his breaking ball over the plate and he was able to do that."

The Mounties (17-5, 7-3) gave Heffley all the run support he needed in the first inning when Bradon Mabry crushed a two-run home run over the left-field fence. Rogers collected 14 hits on the day and knocked Southside starter Hunter Pogue out of the game in the sixth inning.

"The key was Bradon getting the big hit and scoring first," Rogers coach Matt Melson said.

Rogers added two more runs in the fifth, one on an RBI single from Ryan McClurkin. The Mounties blew the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs. Sage White led off the inning with a single, and Grayson Lee followed with a two-run home run to left and a 6-0 lead. Lee was 3 for 5 and Jay Young was 2 for 5 with a double. Jackson Field and White also had two hits each.

Game 2

Rogers 3, Southside 2

The Mounties got another pitching gem, this one a complete-game four-hitter from freshman McKaden Templeton to complete the sweep. Templeton struck out four and walked just two in a pitcher's duel with Southside's Ryan Horn, who allowed just three hits.

Lee was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI for Rogers.

Bentonville 4, Springdale High 3

Nathan Lyons' two-out, two-run single completed a Bentonville rally as the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Springdale at the Tiger Athletic Complex.

Bentonville (13-7, 7-3) did all of its scoring after two were out in the seventh. Justin Hines' single drove in Tyler Jones, who had led off the inning with a double, and Hines was on second when Kam'Ron Mayes-Hunt drew a walk off a 3-2 pitch.

Matt Bratspies then was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lyons, who lined a single off Tyler Turner and allowed Jones and Mayes-Hunt to score ahead of a late throw.

Springdale (15-8, 5-5) did all of its runs in the fifth after Bentonville had taken a 1-0 lead in the first. Nick Been scored on a wild pitch, then Carson Johnson had an RBI double and Logan Carr added a sacrifice fly.

Drew Young went the distance and picked up the win for Bentonville, while Turner took the loss for Springdale.

Fayetteville 10, Rogers Heritage 3

The Purple Bulldogs broke open a tight game with a seven-run sixth inning to claim the big win Tuesday at Veterans Park.

Thomas Broyles punctuated the big inning with a three-run home run to give Fayetteville a 10-2 lead.

Braden Jordan went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Barrett Banister and Garrett Owens added two hits each for Fayetteville (15-9, 7-3 7A-West).

Ethan Gates drove in two of Heritage's three runs, including an RBI double in the fifth that pulled the War Eagles (7-14, 2-8) within 3-2.

Springdale Har-Ber 5, Fort Smith Northside 2

A three-run seventh inning helped the Wildcats rally past Fort Smith Northside on the road, completing the 7A-West sweep.

Brady's Patrick hit a bases-clearing three-run triple in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie. Patrick drove in four of Har-Ber's five runs.

Har-Ber starter Michael King pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out six to outduel Northside starter Triston Wolfe, who struck out five.

Tyler Blackston was 1 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases for Har-Ber (16-7, 8-2).
