Signature from Kobe no shoe-in

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant had no problem signing autographs for teammates, except for Nick Young, who handed the Nike pitchman a pair of Adidas shoes.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant had no problem signing autographs for teammates, except for Nick Young, who handed the Nike pitchman a pair of Adidas shoes.

Wednesday was Kobe Bryant's night, and he wasn't going to end it by adding value to a rival brand of sneakers.

In fact, when Lakers teammate Nick Young presented the Mamba with a pair of his Adidas shoes to autograph, Bryant -- a noted Nike endorser who had just scored 60 points -- threw the shoes in the trash.

"The feeling was like we won a championship, you know?" Young said Thursday when asked how much fun Bryant's farewell game was for him. "They had the champagne bottles after. But yeah, it was great. The confetti, the five-minute intro he had, Kobe signing autographs. We were all in line like we were fans, you know, in the locker room."

Young then got to the interesting part.

"The fact that [Bryant] threw my Adidas and didn't sign my Adidas, I was a little disappointed in that," he said. "But he could not end without something like that, so I think he threw my shoes in the trash -- but yeah, that's Kobe for you."

However, Bryant did sign some of his signature Nikes for Young, which he has been doing for other players all season long. He also took a photo with Young's son.

"I thought that was cool," said Young, who got a signed box score by Bryant that Young posted on Instagram afterward.

$38,000 hats

Kobe Bryant wasn't the only one racking up shocking numbers Wednesday night.

During the Los Angeles Lakers star's final game, the Staples Center sold $1.2 million worth of Bryant memorabilia, Argosy Entertainment Group vice president Sean Ryan told ESPN's Darren Rovell.

With some of the prices, it's not surprising the final tally was so high.

There were hats going for more than $38,000 and others that cost $24,000 or more. There were jackets selling for close to $6,000 and jerseys that would run fans $824 a pop.

In total, there were 16 hats made. Per Rovell, just three of these went unsold.

Bryant did what he could to give fans their money's worth, going for an astounding 60 points.

Moments like that can blur the line between needing and having something like a hat made of snake skin.

"It says that fans are really appreciative of this moment and wanted to maybe have something they can remember," Bryant told Rovell.

Golf is supposed to be a gentleman's game, right?

PGA Tour veteran Mike Weir withdrew from this week's RBC Heritage after shooting an opening-round 78 on Thursday, and Dawie van der Walt let him have it.

A PGA Tour rookie from South Africa, van der Walt was the second alternate for this week's stop in Hilton Head, S.C., so he took to Twitter after learning of Weir's early exit to air some sour grapes.

"Gota love a guy who gets an invite into a Tour event and then WD after the first round," van der Walt wrote, employing the hashtag, "#hangitupmike."

Challenged to explain his remarks, Van der Walt later tweeted: "I should not have said that its nothing against him it's just when you hurt and WD and [an]other could have played."

Both tweets were later deleted.

Weir, a former Masters champion playing on a major medical exemption, did not cite an injury upon his withdrawal. According to the Golf Channel, the Canadian has either withdrawn or missed the cut in each of his last 24 starts and hasn't even broken par in any of his 12 competitive rounds so far this year.
