THE FLIP SIDE

Local outdoors coverage makes move to Tuesdays

Your local outdoors coverage is taking a hike from Thursday over to the Tuesday newspaper, where new and more spacious forests and fields await.

Starting next week, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette local outdoors coverage will move to Tuesday. All the stories, photos and information you've enjoyed on Thursdays will have a new home. We'll keep getting you out there on our rivers, lakes and trails, just on a different day and in a different part of the paper.

Our local outdoors coverage will move from the sports section to become Section E. The change creates more space for outdoors. It means you'll see more and larger photos that will most always run in color. The detailed Northwest Arkansas fishing report will run Tuesdays. So will bass tournament results and news briefs of outdoor events scheduled around the region.

Our feline outdoors columnist, Boat Dock, will weigh in with an occasional column when he feels like writing one. Cats don't do deadlines.

We won't leave you itching for outdoors news in the Thursday and Sunday sports sections. Outdoors coverage on those days will remain in sports, but will have a more of a statewide and national focus. Thursday and Sunday outdoors will feature columns and stories by Bryan Hendricks, who lives in Little Rock. Bryan's travels take him around the state. He also covers the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission meetings and events.

A statewide fishing report, waterfowl report and other news of statewide interest will be part of the Thursday and Sunday newspapers and our website, www.nwadg.com.

I'm excited about the change. Readers mentioned they like our Northwest Arkansas outdoors content. They just want more of it. We listened, so we hope you'll take time to check out what's happening in our local outdoors on Tuesdays.

Other comments I've been pleased to hear are compliments on the variety of topics featured in our local outdoors pages. There's fishing and hunting for sure, but more often canoeing, hiking, biking, bird watching and nature subjects. We strive to cover the great wealth of outdoor opportunities available in our little corner of the Ozarks.

On a personal note, I'd like to thank everyone who has let us tag along with you on your hikes, fishing and hunting trips, canoe expeditions and more in the quest to gather good stories and photos from our local outdoors. We couldn't do it without you letting us share your outdoor adventures with our readers.

Keep sending us information about your local outdoor events, meetings and tournaments via email, [email protected]. Got a fish photo or nature shot to share? Send it along. Our deadline is Wednesday noon for the next Tuesday's paper.

We'll keep it all coming you way, starting on Tuesday.
