Art on the ball?

"Growing Up ... In Words and Images," mixed-media paintings by Pine Bluff native and former NBA all-star Joe Barry Carroll, goes on display with an opening reception, 8 p.m. Friday at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock. Carroll will give a gallery talk and sign books in the Museum Store as part of the Second Friday Art Night reception.

The exhibition of paintings from Carroll's memoir coffee table book of the same name will be up in the museum's Trinity Gallery for Arkansas Artists through Jan. 3. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to reception and galleries and parking are free; admission to the grounds is $2.50 for adults, $1 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. Rediscovered Delta

Denise White Parkinson, author of Daughter of the White River: Depression-Era Treachery and Vengeance in the Arkansas Delta, will read, sign books and exhibit photographs from the book, 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Casa Bella Decor Emporium, 325 Broadway, Hot Springs. Light hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served. Parkinson will also attend a tour of "Delta Rediscovered: Arkansas County, 1880-1924," which she curated, 3-6 p.m. at Linda Palmer Gallery, 800 B Central Ave. Refreshments will be served there, too. Side Street Steppers

Memphis "vintage music" band the Side Street Steppers will headline the annual fundraiser for the Ozark Foothills FilmFest, this year titled "Steppin' Out with the Side Street Steppers," 2 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth's Restaurant, 231 E. Main St., Batesville. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, which includes appetizers and drinks. Proceeds will support the annual film festival and T Tauri Movie Camp, a summer artist residency project offering video production workshops for youngsters from grades 4 through 12. Missile history

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's September "Walks Through History" tour, 11 a.m. Saturday, will visit the Titan II ICBM Launch Complex 374-7 site at Southside in Van Buren County, on the west side of U.S. 65 about 3.5 miles north of Damascus and one mile south of the South Side Bee Branch School District. A Sept. 19, 1980, explosion at the site killed an Air Force airman and hurled a nuclear warhead, which did not explode, several feet from the silo. UCA sculptures

Sculptor Dan Steinhilber, artist in residence at the University of Central Arkansas this fall, will give a brief gallery talk during a reception, 4-6 p.m. today, as his work goes on display in the Baum Gallery of Fine Art at UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. There will be an unveiling, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, of an outdoor public art installation that Steinhilber started Monday at UCA. The exhibition will be up through Oct. 23. Zumba zone

As a part of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Arkansas Children's Hospital is hosting the first Go for Gold! Zumbathon charity event from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the ACH Fitness Center, 1621 W. 10th St. in Little Rock. More than a dozen Zumba instructors will lead the high-energy fitness and fun. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the hospital's hematology/oncology department.
