Volleyball: Southside holds off Rogers High

ROGERS -- After Rogers High cut Fort Smith Southside's lead to 2-1 during a 7A-West Conference volleyball match Tuesday in King Arena, Confederettes coach Stave Haaser was looking for somebody to step up and take charge.

Senior Greer Rogers did just that.

Rogers had seven of her team-high 13 kills in the fourth game to lead Southside to a 25-17 win that capped a 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 15-25, 25-17) victory over the Lady Mounties. Greer started the fourth game with three straight kills, and the senior ended the match with another kill as Southside (6-4, 1-1 7A-West) finds the conference win column for the first time.

"We needed somebody to step up because we struggled and didn't play very well in the third game," Haaser said. "Somebody had to put the team on their back, and that is what we told them between games. Greer did that for us. I knew Rogers was going to comeback, and we will gladly take this one. Everybody in this conference is good and we are just glad to come up here and get a win."

Mikayla Dietz added 11 kills for Southside and the junior had six aces. Rogers (4-1, 1-1) led 13-8 in the first game but Southside countered with an 8-0 run as Dietz had four aces for a 16-13 lead. Southside finished with 10 aces.

"Dietz is an excellent server and she did get us on a run," Haaser said. "That did turn game one, and we had everything going our way for a while. Game one is the most important one because you have to get that one to have a chance."

Rogers coach Jeana Breedlove said Southside's run in the first game was a momentum changer. Sophomore Hannah Martin led Rogers with 12 kills while Samantha Lassiter added 11.

"That run in game one set the tone for the night," Breedlove said. "In the third game, we looked like us. We have some work to do, we need to put together three to five sets like we played in the third game. Hannah played well most of the time, and she is a clutch player. She has so many different tools in her tool belt."
