ASU's Golden faces drug, robbery, firearm charges

JONESBORO -- A former Arkansas State basketball player appeared Monday for a probable cause hearing in Jonesboro District Court on charges that include aggravated robbery and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Cameron Golden, 21, was dismissed from the ASU men's basketball team by Coach John Brady on Saturday for a violation of team rules and university policy. Brady did not provide further comment in the statement.

According to probable cause affidavit, an ASU student reported Friday that he was robbed of $280 by a group of men from whom he was trying to buy marijuana, and when the student gave chase, one of them pointed a "silver handgun" at him.

One of the suspects, Donald Mark Perry, was identified on surveillance video and an investigation showed that Perry had gained access to a dorm parking lot using Golden's student I.D. card. Perry, 24, was also listed on the jail roster Monday as facing a charge of aggravated robbery.

Police searched Golden's apartment at the Red Wolf Den residence hall Saturday and found a Smith and Wesson handgun, which had been reported stolen in Jonesboro in August, according to the affidavit. Also in the closet was a shoe box containing $1,390 in cash, two bottles containing "usable amount" of codeine cough syrup not prescribed to Golden, a bottle containing hydrocodone prescribed to a "Donald Perry" and a rolled $1 dollar bill with a "white powdery residue inside" that a field test kid showed a positive reaction to methamphetamine, according to the affidavit.

Golden has also been placed on interim suspension from the university per ASU conduct rules, spokesman Bill Smith said.

In addition to aggravated robbery and simultaneous possession charges, which each carry penalties of 10-40 years or life in prison, Golden faces charges of delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a handgun on school property, theft by receiving and possession of drug paraphernalia, each of which carry penalties of 1-6 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.

Last season, Golden averaged 13.7 points, second most on the team, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while playing in every game for the Red Wolves last season. Golden was also second in minutes played (35.0), and assists (78) and led the team in three-pointers made (61) and steals (49). Golden had played in 92 career games for the Red Wolves and had 60 starts.
