Museum to screen film on war aviator

BENTONVILLE — A World War II fighter pilot who was shot down and survived more than a month in the wilderness is the subject of a documentary to be shown today at the Walmart Museum.

Injury Slight … Please Advise will be screened at 3:30 p.m. at 105 N. Main St. on the downtown Bentonville square.

Admission is free, but the museum is requesting that guests send an email in advance to [email protected] to confirm attendance because of limited seating.

Charles “Sully” O’Sullivan was shot down over the jungles of Papua New Guinea in 1943. He encountered a hostile tribe that O’Sullivan said was “after his blood.” He escaped from their territory and found relief at an Australian outpost, according to Josh Baxter, the documentary’s director and a Wal-Mart TV producer.

Remnants of O’Sullivan’s plane turned up decades later.

O’Sullivan served at Little Rock Air Force Base late in his career and lived in North Little Rock for more than 40 years, Baxter said.

The film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Steve Cushman, who led the expedition to the plane wreckage and who appears in the film. He also will give a presentation on wreck hunting and research in the Pacific.
