2 Civil War markers OK'd

Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers will be erected in Lafayette and Montgomery counties, a state commission overseeing the program announced.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission works with local partners to tell stories of how the Civil War affected communities in Arkansas. The sesquicentennial period ends this year.

The Lafayette County marker, sponsored by the Lewisville Lions Club, is to be placed at a roadside picnic area on Arkansas 29 north of Lewisville. The marker will commemorate Civil War activities in Lafayette County and the black legislators who represented the county during Reconstruction.

The Heritage House Museum of Montgomery County is sponsoring the Montgomery County marker that will commemorate Civil War activities and troops raised in the county. The marker will be placed on the south lawn of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Mount Ida.

The commission's marker program has approved 123 markers in 68 of the state's 75 counties. Applications and more information on the commission's activities and other sesquicentennial events are available at the commission's website arkansascivilwar150.com.
