Judge: Capital murder suspect Holly allowed to shower before court appearances

Jury selection resumed Wednesday morning in a capital murder trial, but Circuit Judge Brad Karren took a few moments to resolve a showering issue concerning the defendant.

Zachary Holly, 30, is charged with capital murder, kidnapping, rape and residential burglary in the Nov. 20, 2012 abduction and killing of 6-year-old Jersey Bridgeman. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty.

Robby Golden, one of Holly’s attorneys, told the judge that Holly has been placed on restrictions and he was not allowed to shower before his court appearance. Golden wanted his client to shower.

“I would prefer him to shower as well,” Karren said.

Karren said he had some cologne if Holly needed it.

“He does not smell,” Golden said.

Karren said he would call Capt. Jeremy Guyll at the jail and talk with him about the issue.

The judge took a short break and returned to the courtroom.

He said he had talked with Guyll and learned that Holly was placed on 15 day lockdown for using another inmate’s phone card.

Holly will be allowed to shower before coming to court, but he will have to complete the punishment after his trial concludes, Karren said.

Karren warned Holly that if there are any more disciplinary issues at the jail then there will be a hearing to determine whether Holly will be allowed to shower.

Jury selection is underway and two women were selected Wednesday morning. Eight jurors have now been selected. Four more jurors and three alternates remain to be selected.

Holly lived next to Jersey's family on Southeast A Street. He and his then-wife sometimes babysat Jersey and her younger sister, according to court documents.

A medical examiner determined Jersey died from asphyxia, according to court documents.

Holly is being held without bond in the Benton County Jail.
