Neal and teammate Jade Donnell were the only participants left when the bar was raised to the record height, but Donnell failed on both of her attempts. Neal nicked the bar on her first try, but cleared it with room to spare on her second attempt.

"It's amazing, and I wouldn't be here without coach (Dave) Anderson, who has pushed me," Neal said. "I've had some rough patches, but he's been able to calm me.

"The first try, the standards were wrong. I noticed they were too far back, so I moved them and planted my pole as hard as I could. That's what got me there."

Neal was the only athlete to break a record, but the meet did provide a surprise. Fayetteville junior sprinter Jameisha Jones set the stage for her double victory with a shocker in the 400-meter run, knocking off Springdale Har-Ber standout Amanda Dillon.

Jones used a late charge to take the lead and turned in her time of the season at 57.55 seconds, while Dillon's time was at 57.86.

"I know I was behind, but I just really wanted to win," said Jones, who also won the 200 in 25.30 seconds. "She's beaten me the whole season, and I knew it would feel good to get her this one time. It was the last 50 meters. She's such a good runner, and I just wanted to stay close and pass her at the end."

The biggest individual winner came on the boys side as Rogers Heritage senior Joey Saucier pulled off a trio of first-place finishes and took the high-point honor with 37.5 points.

He came away with wins in the long jump (23-1), the 100 (10.83) and the 200 (22.27). He also took third in the long jump and helped the War Eagles take third in the 4x100 relay.

"I was satisfied with my 100 time," Saucier said. "My goal was 10.85, so I'm on course for a 10.7 in state and possibly 10.6 at the Meet of Champs. Of course, I'll have to work hard for that.

"I'm a little disappointed in my 200 and long jump because I had better jumps and better times in the last meet at Fort Smith Southside. In the 200 I wanted to break the record, and in the prelims I blew it off because I could do it in the finals and I had already qualified for state. I regret not running faster in the prelims."

Bentonville came away with both team titles. In the girls division, the Lady Tigers nipped second-place Fayetteville by a 200-191 margin, while Rogers High was a distant third with 99 points.

Bentonville's boys had an easier time, even though coach Mike Power gambled by leaving some who had already qualified for the state meet out and trying to qualify more athletes. The Tigers finished with 165.5 points to Fayetteville's 125.5, followed by Rogers with 111 and Har-Ber with 95.

"I think about next week and the state meet," Power said. "This is our home meet, and we had some step up. We had four throwers to score in the shot put, which we didn't expect, and three of the top six in the discus. That was good off the track, and we had good scoring in the pole vault and the hurdles."
