Spring training report

NATIONALS-CARDINALS

Zimmerman leaves

VIERA, Fla. -- Washington first baseman Ryan Zimmerman left the game early after diving for a ball in the Nationals' 1-1 tie with the split-squad St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

The oft-injured Zimmerman exited after the second inning. Manager Matt Williams said Zimmerman "banged himself a little bit" but added, "He's good. No worries."

Nationals closer Drew Storen made his second spring training appearance and threw one scoreless inning. He had not pitched since March 11, two days before the righty had surgery to remove a bone in his left hand.

Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed one run over six innings.

Carlos Martinez, vying for the fifth spot in the St. Louis rotation, gave up one run in five innings.

Jose Lobaton had three hits for the Nationals, including a pair of doubles. The game was stopped after nine innings.

CARDINALS-METS

Starters do well

JUPITER, Fla. -- Starters John Lackey and Matt Harvey both pitched well Friday as the split-squad St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 5-4.

Lackey gave up one run and six hits in seven innings, walking none and striking out one. He needed only 84 pitches in the longest outing by a St. Louis pitcher this spring.

Pitching on his 26th birthday, Harvey allowed one run and three hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking none.

Harvey missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery. The All-Star threw 58 of his 80 pitches for strikes.

Rafael Ortega hit his first two home runs this spring, a solo shot in the sixth and a three-run drive in the eighth. He had been sent to the minor league camp earlier this week.

DIAMONDBACKS-ANGELS

Bradley solid

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona rookie Archie Bradley pitched five solid innings while C.J. Wilson struggled as the split-squad Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2.

Bradley, a candidate to make the rotation out of spring, lowered his spring ERA to 2.20 after allowing one run and six hits.

Bradley was the Diamondbacks' top pick in the 2011 draft. He made his third spring start and fifth appearance overall.

Wilson allowed nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs, with only one earned.

The Diamondbacks scored five times in the second inning, a lot of it because of shoddy defense. Nick Evans reached on an infield single off the glove of third baseman Kyle Kubitza and moved to third on a walk and shortstop Erick Aybar's error. Kubitza also made an error in the inning.

A.J. Pollock hit a two-run single, Wilson walked a batter and Tomas Yasmany reached when a short fly ball to right field fell between two defenders for another run.

YANKEES-PHILLIES

Yankees on roll

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Stephen Drew had a two-run single and Chris Young added a run-scoring double in a seven-run fifth inning, and the New York Yankees romped past the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 in a game called in the top of the sixth because of rain.

Michael Pineda gave up five hits in five impressive innings for New York. He struck out five.

The Yankees began the fifth with five consecutive hits off Jake Diekman. Diekman only got out one of the eight batters he faced, Carlos Beltran on a flyball to right field.

The game was called for rain with two outs and the Yankees having scored three times in the sixth.

BLUE JAYS-TIGERS

Verlander gets cramp

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Justin Verlander left with cramping in his right triceps during the third inning of the Detroit Tigers' 4-1 rain-shortened loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The game was in the bottom of the fifth.

Verlander will be evaluated today but fully expects to make his next scheduled start. He walked off the field soon after he called team trainers to the mound.

Kyle Ryan replaced Verlander, who allowed one run and one hit over 2 2/3 innings.

Drew Hutchison, in the mix to start the Blue Jays' opener April 6 against the New York Yankees, gave up one run and four hits in five innings. He just missed making a diving catch near the third base line on Hernan Perez's third-inning bunt single.

BRAVES-RED SOX

Buchholz roughed up

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Julio Teheran labored through 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two runs, and the Atlanta Braves roughed up Clay Buchholz for 12 hits and four runs in a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox in a game called in the top of the seventh inning because of rain.

Teheran, who is expected to be the Braves' opening-day starter for the second consecutive year, has struggled this spring, but he lowered his ERA to 5.79 Friday. He walked four and had runners on base in every inning but one. He also allowed a home run to Boston center fielder Mookie Betts.

Buchholz allowed a home run to Kelly Johnson in his five innings and struck out six.

Atlanta's A.J. Pierzynski went 2 for 3 to raise his average to .393. Pedro Ciriaco, vying for the Braves starting shortstop position, led off and had two hits and three RBI to up his average to .370. Freddie Freeman also had two hits for the Braves.

Betts went 2 for 3 to raise his spring average to .487. His home run was the first of the spring. Brock Holt also had two hits for Boston.

PIRATES-TWINS

May makes last bid

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Gregory Polanco and Tony Sanchez hit solo home runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a rain-shortened 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

The game was called in the top of the eighth inning.

Both Pirates home runs came off Trevor May, who was making his final bid to open the season in the big league rotation. May was lifted after 4 2/3 innings, having allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk.

Left-hander Tommy Milone appears to have the upper hand in that three-way competition with May and veteran right-hander Mike Pelfrey.

Brian Dozier singled, tripled and made a leaping catch of a line drive behind second base for the Twins.

CUBS-WHITE SOX

Cubs connecting

MESA, Ariz. -- Jorge Soler and Chris Coghlan each hit two-run home runs, Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo also connected, and the Chicago Cubs beat the rival White Sox 6-3.

Entering the day, the Cubs had hit 32 home runs, second-most in the majors this spring.

The home runs came off Jeff Samardzija, the White Sox's opening-day starter on April 6 at Kansas City.

Cubs starter Jason Hammel pitched six innings allowing two runs and six hits.

For the White Sox, Tyler Flowers hit a mammoth solo home run to center field. Melky Cabrera also hit a solo home run.
