American Legion names new leader

Members of the American Legion Department of Arkansas elected their new commander Sunday at the legion's state convention in North Little Rock.

Verlon Abram of Wilburn will now start his yearlong term as commander, replacing C. Jacob Greeling of Bella Vista.

Abram graduated from the Arkansas Technical University ROTC program with a commission to the U.S. Army. During his service, he was based in Maryland, Alabama, Texas, Germany and the Netherlands.

Abram worked for 29 years in the Red River Army Depot just west of Texarkana, Texas. He moved back to Arkansas in 2007, and he's been active in the American Legion post in Heber Springs.

As commander, Abram will travel the state advocating for veterans and encouraging legion members to be active in their communities, said Doyle Batey, adjutant of the state American Legion Department.

The state's American Legion includes 200 posts and more than 16,000 members.
