Killian signs with Rockies

Arkansas junior pitcher Trey Killian, a right-hander from Mountain Home, has signed with the Colorado Rockies, the school announced Monday.

Killian. a ninth-round draft pick, received a $150,000 signing bonus from the Rockies according to MLB.com. He missed the first month of this season because of elbow soreness, then returned to his role as the Razorbacks’ No. 1 starter.

Killian was 3-5 with a 4.76 earned-run average in 87 innings with 62 strikeouts and 24 walks this seaosn. He went at least six innings in nine of 15 starts and allowed one earned run or less six times, including seven perfect innings in a 1-0 loss at Vanderbilt on March 15.

Killian’s 10-17 career record with Arkansas was deceptive because he often suffered from a lack of run support. As a sophomore he was 4-9, but had a 2.30 ERA in 94 innings with 4 complete games in 14 starts.

His career ERA was 3.43 in 51 games and 217 2/3 innings with 158 strikeouts and 54 walks.

Razorbacks second in attendance

Arkansas finished in the top two nationally in attendance, trailing only LSU, with an average attendance of 8,290 per game at Baum Stadium during the season.

Arkansas sold 273,595 tickets for 33 home games, giving Arkansas the second-highest mark in the country for tickets sold and average attendance. The tickets sold total was the second highest total in program history behind the 286,472 sold during the 2012 season.

In addition, the attendance for the Fayetteville Super Regional between Arkansas and Missouri State had crowds of 12,167, 11,869 and 11,694 marked three of the top four postseason crowds from the NCAA regional and super regionals rounds. The 12,589 tickets sold for the April 25 game against Mississippi State marked the 14th largest on-campus crowd in NCAA history.

Arkansas Tech’s Surtevall gets GAC honor

Arkansas Tech golfer Rebecka Surtevall was named female athlete of the year by the Great American Conference on Monday night.

Surtevall won three events during the school year: the Golfweek Fall Invitational, the GAC Preview and Holiday Inn Express Classic. She also had nine top-five finishes.

She finished second at the GAC Tournament and finished fourth in the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Championships. She was named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association first-team All-America team for the second consecutive year and was named a second-team Division II academic All-American.

Southern Nazarene golfer Michael Hearne was named male athlete of the year.

Harding duo earns academic honors

Harding’s Davis Richardson and Arielle Saunders were named male and female scholar athletes of the year Monday night by the Great American Conference.

Richardson, a baseball player, led the Bisons in batting average (.325), home runs (8), RBI (37), slugging percentage (.552) and on-base percentage (.460). He completed his junior year with a 4.0 grade-point average in interior design. He was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and was admitted to the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society and Alpha Chi Honor Society.

Saunders was named GAC Player of the Year after helping the Lady Bisons win the conference regular-season and tournament championships. She finished her career as the GAC’s all-time leader in rebounds and was second in scoring, blocks and assists.

She had a 4.0 grade-point average in psychology, earning academic All-America honors twice. She was named the 2015 outstanding psychology student at Harding.

She worked as a tutor for the Center for Student Success and held memberships in Pi Theta Pi social club, the Arkansas Eta Chapter of Alpha Chi, Omicron Delta Kappa, the American Studies Institute, Psi Chi at Harding and the Student Council for Exceptional Children.
