Farrell grabs Day 1 lead at Chick-A-Tee

SPRINGDALE -- Josh Farrell has played in his share of competitive golf tournaments. Farrell considers 36 holes this weekend at the Springdale Country Club more about leisure than serious play.

That approach has paid off one round into the 77th Dwight Collins Chick-A-Tee Invitational.

Farrell, a former University of Arkansas golfer who also grew up playing Springdale Country Club, shot a 5-under par 67 Saturday to take the first round lead at the Chick-A-Tee. The tournament, scheduled for 54 holes, was cut back to a 36-hole stroke play event after Friday's round was cancelled because of wet course conditions.

"It was just a fun day and we had a good time," Farrell said. "I don't get to get out and play as much anymore and this is just a fun time with friends."

Farrell began his round at hole No. 2 and birdied three of his first six holes for a quick start. His back nine included a bogey-free stretch, with back-to-back birdies at the par four 14th and par five 15th to close at 5-under.

"I didn't get into any trouble today," Farrell said. "I didn't make a lot of great shots and I didn't make a lot of putts. But I didn't get into any trouble."

Steven Dixon, winner of the tournament in 2013, is primed for a repeat title as well after shooting a 2-under 70. Dixon, a regular at SCC who won his first Chick-A-Tee with an 8-under score over three rounds in 2013, used an accurate day for his 2-under score to position himself in second place.

"It was target golf out there," Dixon said. "We're playing lift, clean and place, which can be good. But you have to be accurate. So it was pretty much target golf."

Dixon, playing with former Chick-A-Tee winner Icem Brewer and championship flight regular contender Michael Chaney, began his round on par three 11th hole and didn't wast time getting off to a hot start. At the 488-yard, par five 12th, Dixon scored an eagle to quickly get to 2-under par. Another birdie at the par four 17th sent him to the front 9 at two-under par following a bogey at No. 13.

Defending champion Brett Grenata shot an opening round 75.

The Chick A-Tee, named in honor of the late Dwight Collins -- a former Springdale Country Club golf professional -- concludes with an 18-hole round today.
