State, tribe score job-training grants

The Arkansas Department of Workforce Services and the Cherokee Nation in neighboring Oklahoma are receiving more than $12 million from the U.S. Department of Labor for their individual job-training programs.

The $6.3 million Arkansas grant will be used to provide employment skills training and occupational training for the long-term unemployed in manufacturing, health care, information technology and skilled construction trades, according to a release Friday.

The Cherokee Nation, the only American Indian tribe to receive the federal funding, was awarded $6.5 million to invest in its job-training programs, according to a separate release.

The grants are part of $138 million awarded to a total of 27 states and the Cherokee Nation.

Fishing resort going up for auction in July

Lobo Landing, a trout fishing resort on the Little Red River, will be sold at an absolute auction July 7, Wilson Real Estate Auctioneers Inc. of Hot Springs said Friday.

In an absolute auction, the property sells to the highest bidder or bidders, with no minimums or reserves.

The resort is being marketed both as an entirety, to be operated as a business, and in 18 tracts, many consisting of a single furnished cabin and boat slip. The resort has about 1,000 feet of frontage on the river, 12 cabins, five vacant lots with boat slips and a marina/store. The property also includes two bunk houses, a pool and a new covered boat dock with 24 slips. Bidders may make offers on any tract or combination of tracts.

State index up 0.69 with a dozen gainers

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, gained 0.69 to 376.32 on Friday.

Twelve stocks advanced and six declined.

Bear State Financial rose 4 percent in almost three times its average volume and USA Truck rose 3.8 percent in average volume.

P.A.M. Transportation Services fell 4.8 percent in heavy trading.

For the week, 14 stocks advanced and four declined.

USA Truck gained 4.9 percent for the week and P.A.M. Transportation fell 7.6 percent.

Total volume of the index was 32.3 million shares. The average daily volume for the week was 21.4 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
