I-49 lane closures set in Washington County

Work beginning next week on Interstate 49 in Washington County will require overnight lane closures, state Highway and Transportation Department officials said Thursday.

Crews will begin to widen from four to six lanes about 4.5 miles of I-49. The work will require closures of the northbound and southbound inside lanes, beginning a quarter-mile north of the U.S. 71B interchange in Fayetteville and ending a quarter-mile north of the U.S. 412 interchange in Springdale, officials said.

Officials said the work includes removing existing pavement markings and re-striping for reduced lane width, widening the outside shoulder at the Clear Creek, Johnson Road and U.S. 412 bridges and installing a temporary concrete barrier rail along the median.

The closures will begin Tuesday evening and end Aug. 14, officials said. The southbound, inside lane closure will occur nightly from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and northbound, inside lane closures will begin Wednesday and occur nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Barrels will be in place to control traffic along with electronic message boards and warning signs to direct motorists, officials said.
