Civil War markers OK'd in 2 counties

Hot Spring and Pope counties have been approved for Civil War sesquicentennial historical markers to commemorate activities in those counties during the 1861-1865 war, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced.

The marker in Hot Spring County will commemorate the Rockport Crossing-Camden Expedition, denoting the Union army's crossing of the Ouachita River during the 1864 Camden Expedition.

The marker will be placed at the Ouachita River Park in Malvern. The Center for Arkansas Culture and History in Education, the city of Malvern and the Ouachita River Park Commission are sponsors of the marker.

The Potts Family in the Civil War marker for Pope County intends to commemorate Civil War activities of the residents of Potts Inn. The marker will be located at Potts Inn at Russellville and is sponsored by the Pope County Historical Foundation.

The Arkansas Sesquicentennial Commission works with local partners to tell stories of how the Civil War affected communities within the state.

The commission's stated goal is to place at least one marker in each of the state's 75 counties by the end of the sesquicentennial period this year. The markers bring the total to 127 markers in 70 counties. Counties still without Civil War Sesquicentennial markers are Calhoun, Howard, Lawrence, Polk and Sharp.
