Watson Chapel's school chief starts

PINE BLUFF -- Watson Chapel School District's new superintendent began work this week, saying he hopes to make student achievement a top priority.

Connie Hathorn, who was serving as superintendent of the Youngstown, Ohio, School District when he accepted the position at Watson Chapel, will receive a district vehicle for his use and an annual compensation of $142,353 during his 3-year contract.

This isn't Hathorn's first time in Pine Bluff, or at Watson Chapel. He taught in the Watson Chapel district from 1979-82 and was previously a teacher in the Pine Bluff School District from 1973-76. Hathorn also coached and taught at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff from 1976-79.

Hathorn was also among four finalists in 2013 for the superintendent's job in the Little Rock School District.
