Deputies responded Friday to 25 Poole Lane, the home of Donna Salvo, 42. She said a man had broken in through a window and pointed a shotgun at her, according to the sheriff's office.

A friend of Salvo, Corenia Dillard, 70, had been asleep on a couch when the intruder broke in, the sheriff's office reported. He grabbed a handgun and shot the man once. The intruder jumped out of the broken window and fled.

The sheriff's office soon focused on a 36-year-old man as a suspect after deputies found him being treated for a gunshot wound in the stomach at a Clinton hospital. The wounded man was taken to Conway Regional Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized Monday.

The sheriff's office said charges were pending.
