6 killed, 4 injured on state highways

Six people died and four more were injured on Arkansas roads over a four-day period, authorities reported Monday.

A Hot Springs man was killed and another man was injured Friday in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. 70, according to a state police report released Monday.

Charles R. Stewart, 54, of Hot Springs was driving a 2007 Nissan east on U.S. 70 about 10:30 a.m. Near Cain Road in Garland County, Stewart veered into a turning lane and struck a 2012 Chevrolet head-on, Arkansas State Police said.

The Chevrolet was pushed backward into a 2008 GMC.

Stewart was killed, and 49-year-old Darin Leroy Garner of Hot Springs was injured, police said. Garner was a passenger in the Chevrolet.

Garner was transported to CHI St. Vincent-Hot Springs.

The drivers of the Chevrolet and GMC, as well as a passenger in the GMC, were not injured, the report states. Levin Floyd, 74, of Hot Springs was driving the Chevrolet. Nancy Vucote, 63, of Hot Springs was driving the GMC, and 68-year-old Alvin Vucote, also of Hot Springs, was a passenger.

On Saturday, three people were killed and two others were injured after a semi-truck collided with a car in Crittenden County.

Alexandria D. Cannon, 34, of Marked Tree was driving a 1995 Ford Escort with multiple passengers. Cannon attempted to turn east from Arkansas 50 onto U.S. 64 when the Escort was struck by an eastbound 1992 Kenworth semi-truck.

Three passengers in the Escort were pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. Police identified two of the deceased as 28-year-old Jerry D. Coopwood and 32-year-old Deshaun L. Hurst, both of Earle. An unidentified minor was also killed.

Cannon and another passenger -- 25-year-old Victoria R. Hampton of Indianapolis -- were injured. They were transported to Regional One Health in Memphis. The driver of the Kenworth, 44-year-old Travis P. Coleman of Marianna, was not injured.

A man was killed Sunday after his vehicle struck a utility pole in Strong, state police reported.

Roy Ricky Silmon, 57, of Strong, was driving a 2004 GMC east on Arkansas 129 when he lost control and drove off the road near Concord Street, police said.

According to a preliminary report, Silmon struck the utility pole and it fell onto the GMC's cab. Silmon was killed.

On Monday, a man died after a septic truck crashed in northern Pulaski County, according to the Pulaski County sheriff's office.

Deputies responded just before noon Monday to the 10700 block of Sayles Road, north of Jacksonville, where they found two men had been injured in a single-vehicle wreck.

According to a sheriff's office report, the driver died of his injuries after emergency personnel removed him from the truck. Deputies identified him as 49-year-old Dennis Brasher of Redfield.

A passenger was transported by Air Evac Lifeteam to a regional hospital, the report states. The sheriff's office did not release his identity Monday.
