A-Rod moves into top 25

YANKEES

BOSTON — New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez moved into the top 25 on baseball’s career hit list with a double in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox to record his 3,020th hit. That tied him with Rafael Palmeiro for 25th alltime.

Rodriguez needs three more hits to tie Lou Brock for 24th.

Palmeiro and Rodriguez share another distinction — they’ve both been caught using performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez served a yearlong suspension in 2014, and the scandal has tarnished his rise up the career home run list. He hit his 672nd home run Saturday, fourth all-time.

ALL-STAR GAME

Kershaw, Santiago added

CINCINNATI — Pitchers Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Hector Santiago of the Los Angeles Angels have been added to the rosters for Tuesday’s All-Star Game in place of Washington’s Max Scherzer and Oakland’s Sonny Gray.

Scherzer and Gray started for their clubs on Sunday and elected not to be active, the commissioner’s office said.

Kershaw, the reigning NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, is 6-6 but has a 2.85 ERA. He is an All-Star for the fifth consecutive year. Santiago is a first-time All-Star after going 6-4 with a 2.33 ERA.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and outfielder Brett Gardner, Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier, Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki previously were added to the rosters to fill spots of injured players.

They replaced Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon, Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista, and Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and second baseman Dee Gordon.

RED SOX

Fan recovering from hit

BOSTON — A woman hit by a foul ball at Fenway Park during Friday night’s Red Sox-New York Yankees game is recovering at home after getting three dozen stitches in her forehead.

Stephanie Wapenski, a Red Sox fan from Massachusetts, was sitting along the third base line with her fiance, a Yankees fan who proposed to her last year at Fenway. They live in Branford, Conn.

Wapenski said she was paying attention, but had no time to react when Yankees’ shortstop Didi Gregorius hit the ball in the fifth inning.

“It was like it knew who I was and had a vendetta,” Wapenski told The Boston Globe.

Gregorius sent her one of his bats.

Another woman was hospitalized several days after she was hit in the face by a broken bat at Fenway last month.

MARLINS

Gordon to try to avoid DL

MIAMI — The Miami Marlins say All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon may be able to avoid the disabled list despite dislocating his left thumb.

Gordon will miss the All-Star Game and will likely sit out the Marlins’ first series following the break, but he might return after that, president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Sunday.

Gordon was hurt Saturday when he slid headfirst to beat out an infield single against Cincinnati. There’s some swelling in his thumb, but because he has some motion in it, an MRI was deemed unnecessary, Hill said.

Gordon leads the majors with 122 hits and ranks second with 33 stolen bases. He was voted an All-Star starter for the first time.

RAYS

Shortstop hurts hamstring

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have placed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring and recalled infielder Tim Beckham from Class AAA Durham.

The moves were announced before Sunday’s game against Houston.

Cabrera was hurt running the bases in the second inning of Saturday’s 3-0 victory over the Astros.

Cabrera has made just two errors at short this season. He is hitting.223 with 5 home runs and 22 RBI in 86 games.
