Chandler, a senior at Springdale Har-Ber, transferred from Springdale High after his junior season in which he passed for more than 2,400 yards and 20 touchdowns. Lindsey, a part-time starter as a junior, transferred into Springdale High from Fayetteville, where he threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns.
Both quarterbacks are participating in the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 Showcase, hosted by Shiloh Christian on Friday and today. Chandler and Lindsey even squared off in pool play Friday at Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium, with Chandler leading Har-Ber to a 26-20 win against his former teammates.
Both Chandler (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) and Lindsey (6-3, 175), agreed the transitions to new teams have been smooth this offseason.
"I've had a lot of guys welcome me in and that's made it real easy," Chandler said. "I like it a lot (at Springdale Har-Ber).
"The offense is really similar to what I've run. We run a lot of spread. It's a (Gus) Malzahn offense with a lot of read-option incorporated off of that, and coach (Chris) Wood is just an offensive genius."
Lindsey's move from Fayetteville to Springdale was more than just about a right fit or a chance at more playing time. The switch in schools was also about family, as new Springdale coach Zak Clark is Lindsey's uncle.
The familiarity with Clark, the former Fayetteville offensive coordinator, gives Lindsey a built-in edge. And he's excited with the results thus far.
"I was definitely shocked when I got here," Lindsey said. "I wasn't expecting much, but once I got here I saw how people competed and saw the talent level at receiver, so I was impressed."
Chandler and Lindsey join a strong group in the 7A-West Conference this season at the quarterback position. With Kasey Ford at Bentonville, Taylor Powell at Fayetteville, and Jake Qualls from Rogers Heritage, this fall could once again be a year of the QB in the 7A-West. And both Chandler and Lindsey expect to be a big part of that pack.
"I would definitely say so as far as talented quarterbacks," Lindsey said. "Taylor Powell is a heck of a quarterback. Kasey Ford at Bentonville has a lot of talent. Jake Qualls is talented. Fuller has a lot of talent, and I'm sure there's others.
"It's a strong year for quarterbacks."
Schools step up, help host showcase
Fayetteville coach Daryl Patton implemented a summer passing league in Northwest Arkansas in 2003.
The league was a staple in the area until this year, when team's opted to participate in team camps instead. But thanks to heavy rainfall that made grass fields around Shiloh Christian unplayable, Patton and the Bulldogs were again hosting 7-on-7 action Friday as the Southwest Elite 7on7 Showcase branched out to Fayetteville, Rogers High and Springdale High to utilize the schools' turf fields.
The change in locale didn't happen until late Thursday night, but the venue was ready to go bright and early Friday morning for the start of pool play.
"Nah, I've done it so many times before," Patton said of whether it was difficult to get set up on short notice. "I will say this, since we didn't have to have officials or workers, basically just hosting it, setting the fields up, that's not an issue. If we had to have officials and workers, it would've been tough to do at the last minute."
All games will return to Shiloh Christian today for the bracket portion of the showcase. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. today in Champions Stadium.
