Local chef competes in national competition for the #betterburgerproject @CrystalBridges

Recently, The Better Burger Project was initiated by the James Beard Foundation with a call to make a more sustainable burger by blending ground meat and finely chopped mushrooms. The result is a juicier, healthier burger that also has lower environmental impact by relieving reliance on the beef industry.

This project aligns with the culinary team of Eleven's philosophy to promote and celebrate local food culture through relationships with local farmers, businesses and artisans. The expertise of the staff is shared to educate chefs and food enthusiasts who advocate for "edible responsibility," chef William Lyle said.

Other events at Eleven:

• Tasting Menu inspired by temporary art exhibition

• Monthly WOW events, third Wednesday of the month. Next WOW event is “Warhol’s Nature” from 6-7 p.m. on July 15.

• Eleven’s Riedel Comparative Glass Seminar from 6-8 p.m. on July 19.

Better Burger Project Overview:

• A nationwide challenge to make a “better burger” by blending ground meat with finely chopped mushrooms for a healthier, more sustainable burger.

• Buy the “better burger” at Eleven, post a picture on Instagram using the hashtag #betterburgerproject and tag Crystal Bridges.

• The five chefs with the most photo uploads will go to NYC in October to cook their “better burger” at the James Beard House.

• The James Beard Foundation sets the culinary standards for programs, awards and advocacy. Eleven is a member of JBF and has worked with JBF on fundraising events like the Best of Bentonville.

The "Better Burger" served at Eleven blends Creekstone Angus beef and Sweden Creek shiitake mushrooms.

Votes for the best "Better Burger" are calculated by photos on Instagram with the hashtag #betterburgerproject @CrystalBridges.

The contest continues through this month, and the five chefs with the most photo uploads will compete in a cook-off at the annual James Beard Foundation Food Conference in New York City this October.

Current standings give chef Lyle a fighting chance for this opportunity. More information about the Better Burger Project is available online at jamesbeard.org/better-burger-project.
