Not Guilty Plea Entered in Fayetteville Rape, Kidnapping Case

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville man arrested after police say he beat, terrorized and raped a woman pleaded not guilty to a long list of charges Wednesday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Jerry Lee Surber, 42, of 1001 Mally Wagnon Road, was arraigned on charges of rape, kidnapping, three counts of second-degree domestic battery, two counts of aggravated assault on a family member and first-degree terroristic threatening, all felonies.

Surber was given an Aug. 25 trial date.

A woman called police about 3:35 a.m. June 11 and said Surber beat her with an arrow-tipped rod, punched her repeatedly and used a broken electric flyswatter to rape her, according to an arrest report.

Surber took a butcher knife, put the tip inside the woman's nostril and cut her, according to the report. He threatened to kill the woman and urinated on her, the report said. Surber then forced the woman to cook for him and stabbed her with a fork, according to the report.

Surber had been drinking and fell asleep on the couch, according to the report. The woman escaped and called for help.

When police awakened Surber, he denied there was an altercation, according to the report.

The woman was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale where she was treated and released. She had a fractured nose and her body was covered in bruises, according to the report.

Police said Surber was out on bond over a previous assault on the woman.

Surber has a criminal history that includes rape, terroristic threatening, carrying weapons and assault, according to the report.

Surber is being held at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bond. Police sought a high-than-usual bond to protect the woman, according to the report.
