Basketball: Greenland Sweeps Rival West Fork

WEST FORK -- Greenland girls basketball coach Alan Barton wasn't thrilled with how his team played Tuesday, but he also keeps it in perspective.

The Lady Pirates went on a 15-0 second-quarter run and rolled to a 51-26 win over rival West Fork in the Tiger Dome.

"We didn't play very well, but this is rival basketball," Barton said. "It's two teams that live five miles apart. They've got family members on both sides. My job is to push the girls to be as good as they can be. They might say 'Man, you won by 25' But it wasn't very pretty."

But the West Fork shooting percentage wasn't pretty either. The Lady Tigers shot 19 percent (5-of-27) from the floor and 47 percent (14-of-30) from the foul line. West Fork also committed 21 turnovers.

Greenland (14-2, 3-0 3A-1 West) took control with a 15-0 run in the second quarter. Junior point guard Sarah Wright started the run with a 3-pointer with six minutes, 32 seconds left in the first half, then finished it with a three-point play.

Kim Crown also contributed five points in the run. The 6-foot junior led all scorers with 17 points and was Greenland's only player in double figures.

However, both Barton and West Fork coach Rodney Selph agreed the Lady Pirates had a serious advantage in depth as they play 12 different players regularly. Barton often substitutes five players at a time.

"It's a good thing we have a deep bench," Barton said. "Rodney doesn't have one and he was a man down tonight. But we found a way to get a win on the road and that gets us to 3-0 in the conference."

Selph was without starting guard Dara Smith, who was sidelined with a knee injury. The junior will have the injury examined by a doctor today, Selph said.

But said his team must handle the ball and shoot it better to beat a team like Greenland.

"We are so young," Selph said. "We had five sophomores on the floor at times. That's not an excuse. We've just got to handle the basketball and make free throws."

Shannon Throgmorton led West Fork (10-7, 0-2) with 11 points.

Sophomore Zac Wolfe drained a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer and the Pirates never really looked back.

Wolfe led four Greenland players in double figures with 14, but he had lots of help. Cole Self and Dylan Wolfe chipped in 12 points each and Ty Gaines added 10 for the Pirates, who led 32-15 at halftime.

Zac Wolfe scored 12 in the first half as Greenland (6-8, 2-1) took charge with a 15-2 run.

Ryan Roebke was West Fork's lone player in double figures with 19. The Tigers dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.
