Man arrested in connection with Fayetteville robberies

FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville police arrested a man they believe is connected to two robberies at knifepoint Friday afternoon, said Craig Stout, police spokesman.

No one was injured in the robberies, Stout said.

The arrest at Northwest Arkansas Mall comes about one hour after the first person called police at 12:07 p.m. Friday to say a man in a cream-colored Lincoln had left his vehicle and used a knife in a robbery in the 900 block of North Leverett Avenue.

A woman called seven minutes later to say a man got out of his vehicle near Oakland Avenue and Hughes Street, asked for a lighter, then said he had a gun. He showed the woman a pocket knife and took her cellphone and possibly her wallet, Stout said.

Police questioned a woman who may be connected to the incidents Friday afternoon, Stout said. A woman was seen in the vehicle with the suspect, according to a news release from police at the University of Arkansas.

Fayetteville police notified surrounding law agencies and sent a description of the car, which was spotted by a Springdale police officer, Stout said. One of the victims also provided a license plate number that matched the vehicle the Springdale officer stopped, Stout said.

A preliminary report, which includes the name of the suspect, wasn't available at 5 p.m. Friday, Stout said.
