Abshier changes with the times

Danny Abshier proved he can change with the times, taking an old-fashioned offensive gameplan and adding new wrinkles from a modern attack.

Prairie Grove has long used the Wing-T offense, a grind-it-out, runbased attack with deceptive handoffs. The Tigers did not deviate from their base plan, but new assistant coach Mason Pinkley, who came over from Gentry, injected some spread passing routes that resulted in the Tigers’ most productive passing game in recent history.

The result was a 2,200-yard passing season, and the longest playoff run in program history as the Tigers advanced to the Class 4A state title game. It also propelled Abshier to All-NWADG Coach of the Year honors. Abshier, who has been the head coach at Prairie Grove since 1993 and has compiled more than 160 wins, said this year’s team was a joy to coach.
