Fayetteville water service restored

FAYETTEVILLE -- City officials reported Monday municipal water service is back to normal following a water main break last week near the Beaver Water District plant in Lowell.

Conservation efforts are no longer necessary, and the Arkansas Department of Health deemed the water safe to drink, according to a city news release.

A 42-inch water main ruptured Wednesday following a power failure at the Beaver Water District plant. When power returned, a pressure surge damaged the water line.

Tim Nyander, Fayetteville utilities director, said city crews worked until 4 a.m. Sunday.

Nyander thanked area businesses and residents for conserving water over the weekend while repairs were being made.

The Water and Sewer Division on Friday asked its customers to restrict water usage to drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. Fayetteville customers use about 20 million gallons of water per day, according to Alan Fortenberry, Beaver Water District's CEO.

The city also provides water to Elkins, Farmington, Greenland, part of Johnson, West Fork and some rural areas in Washington County.
